Forgot Your Antacids? Here’s What to Do Instead

We’ve all been there. You’re out running errands, enjoying dinner with friends, or heading to bed—when suddenly, that all-too-familiar burning sensation creeps up your chest. You reach into your bag or medicine cabinet, only to realize… you forgot your antacids.


Don’t worry. While antacids are a fast-acting solution for heartburn and acid reflux, there are still several things you can do to find relief when you’re caught unprepared.


1. Drink a Glass of Water


Water helps dilute stomach acid and can flush it back down into your stomach. Sip slowly and avoid gulping, which can increase air in your stomach and make symptoms worse.


2. Chew Sugar-Free Gum


Chewing gum increases saliva production, which helps neutralize acid and wash it back down the esophagus. Bonus: mint-free gums (like cinnamon or fruit flavors) are best, since mint can sometimes trigger reflux.


3. Try a Baking Soda Solution (Use Sparingly)


Baking soda is alkaline and can help neutralize stomach acid. Mix ½ teaspoon into a glass of water and sip it slowly. However, this isn’t ideal for regular use, especially if you're watching your sodium intake.


4. Reach for a Banana or Oatmeal


Both are gentle on the stomach and can help soothe the digestive tract. Bananas have natural antacid properties, while oatmeal creates a soothing coating for your stomach lining.


5. Stay Upright


Lying down can allow acid to flow back up into your esophagus. Try standing, walking, or at the very least, sitting upright for at least 30 minutes after eating or experiencing symptoms.


6. Avoid Known Triggers


Now’s not the time to grab a coffee, spicy snack, or glass of wine. If you know what tends to make your reflux worse, steer clear until things settle down.


7. Try Deep Breathing


Stress can exacerbate reflux. Slow, deep breaths can help calm your body and reduce tension, giving your digestive system a break.


Pro Tip: Keep a small stash of antacids in your purse, backpack, glove box, or bedside drawer so you’re never caught off guard again.
